Diploma of Information Technology (Networking)

The Australian Qualifications Framework

This course is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. Upon successful completion of Diploma of Information Technology (Network Engineering), students are eligible for membership of the Australian Computer Society at the grade of Provisional Associate (AACS) and with the achievement of two years relevant industry experience in information technology. Students are eligible to apply for student membership of the Society during there studies.

Course Aims

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in high level network management and engineering. The qualification has a strong ICT networking base with the potential for inclusion of a range of broader ICT internetworking, security or e-business units to suit particular needs.

Course Structure

8 Prerequisite Units

  • Follow workplace safety procedures
  • Design organisational documents using computing packages
  • Operate a personal computer
  • Operate computer hardware
  • Operate computing packages
  • Integrate commercial computing packages
  • Use computer operating system
  • Work effectively in an IT environment

 

8 Industry Core Units

  • Produce network architecture design
  • Translate business needs into technical requirements
  • Ensure privacy for users
  • Manage project quality
  • Prepare disaster recovery and contingency plans
  • Build an internet infrastructure
  • Install and manage complex networks
  • Manage complex projects

12 Elective Units – to be chosen by the College

Assessment

The intention of this course is to define a viable and valued workplace outcome. Students completing any associated training course should be able to effectively perform a substantive work role.

The achievement of competence will be assessed by a range of methods aiming at maximum flexibility and customization to address specific needs and learning situations: observation of ongoing activities, short formal and informal tests, presentation of portfolios, role plays, observation of group discussion. Students will undertake informal assessment on an ongoing basis.

This assessment will be used by the teacher to monitor student progress and to provide appropriate feed back. The informal assessments do not contribute to the results achieved by a student. Students should be aware that all competency based tasks must be completed by the submission date. If a student does not pass their formal competency based assessment then they have the right to be re-assessed before they commence their end of semester tests.

Requirements to Receive the Qualification

To receive the Diploma, students are required to successfully complete all units of competence. A qualification will be issued based on the successful assessment of all units of competency.

Duration

Full-time: 1year or 6 months after completion of Certificate IV of IT (Networking).
Tuition Fee: $8,000 (AUD) *Additional fees may apply

Prerequisites:

  • Successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent AND;
  • International students: English language skills at least equivalent to IELTS 5.5 OR IELTS 5.0 with maximum 20 weeks ELICOS course OR EAP OR Advanced level at Ozford English Language Centre.
  • Successful completion of Certificate IV of IT (Networking).
