Ozford College of Business: Course Guide

Certificate IV in TESOL

(Course Code 063590G / CRICOS Code 40540SA)

The Australian Qualifications Framework

This course is a nationally accredited qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) provides a nationally consistent and flexible framework for all qualifications gained through the workplace, post compulsory education and training.

This means that qualifications are designed to be consistent and to be recognised across Australia. Organisations and individuals will be certain of what competencies each AQF qualification includes. The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a national framework that is based on achieving competency.

Course Aims

This course is aimed at people who wish to teach English as a Foreign/Second Language (EFL/ESL) in Australia and overseas and qualified Australian and overseas teachers.

The Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a short intensive course that offers basic training in teaching English to speakers of other languages. This is an initial teacher training program, which, in addition to a degree and either 800 hours of teaching experience or a Diploma in Education, meets the minimum NEAS requirements for registration as an ESL teacher in Australia. This course will enable participants to teach English overseas.

Participants will be given a brief introduction to techniques of classroom management and assessment, and a more thorough introduction to presentation techniques, lesson preparation and analysing language for communicative purposes. The course is highly practical and a major emphasis will be practice teaching. Participants will work collaboratively to prepare and teach lessons, progressing to taking sole responsibility for a two-hour lesson.

Course Structure

  • Apply adult TESOL methodologies to develop english language skills
  • Design and develop learning resources
  •  Identify and use basic grammatical concepts and traditional metalanguage
  • Plan an integrated lesson using communicative language teaching methodology
  • Use the terminology of traditional grammar and locate information in a grammar textbook
  • Design and develop learning strategies

Units for course structure are subject to change. Not all units are offered every term/semester)

Assessment

The achievement of competence will be assessed by a range of methods aiming at maximum flexibility and customization to address specific needs and learning situations: observation of ongoing activities, short formal and informal tests, presentation of portfolios, role plays, observation of group discussion.

Students will undertake informal assessment on an ongoing basis. This assessment will be used by the teacher to monitor student progress and to provide appropriate feed back. The informal assessments do not contribute to the results achieved by a student. Students should be aware that all competency based tasks must be completed by the submission date. If a student does not pass their formal competency based assessment then they have the right to be re-assessed.

Requirements to Receive the Qualification

To receive the Certificate IV, students are required to successfully complete all units of competence. A qualification will be issued based on the successful assessment of all 6 units of competence.
