The Australian Qualifications Framework

This course is a nationally accredited qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) provides a nationally consistent and flexible framework for all qualifications gained through the workplace, post compulsory education and training. This means that qualifications are designed to be consistent and to be recognised across Australia Organisations and individuals will be certain of what competencies each AQF qualification includes.

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a national framework that is based on achieving competency. Please note that this course is a nationally accredited qualification not NAATI approved course, which provides the opportunity for students to decide if they wish to sit for NAATI tests or not.

Course Aims

Students who have a high level of bilingual proficiency and completed the Ozford Diploma of Interpreting are suited to the Advanced Diploma of Interpreting. Students who wish to undertake formal training to prepare for NAATI professional interpreter accreditation are recommended to complete the Advanced Diploma of Interpreting.

The Advanced Diploma of Interpreting offers students an advanced level of training in various applicable areas. The main areas of studies are written and oral transfer skills. In addition students will undertake studies in theory that is internationally accepted. Students will also be exposed to the ethics and professional and contextual aspects of interpreting and translating. All studies are aimed at enabling students to practice and prepare the final examination at NATTI professional level.

  • Interpreting Practice A and B
  • LOTE for Interpreters A and B
  • English for Interpreters A and B
  • Theory and Ethics of Interpreting A and B

Topics : Interpreters work across all industries. Their main work is carried out, but not limited to the following areas:

  • Social Welfare (Federal, State, private & charitable organization)
  • Employment (public & private sector)
  • Government (State and Federal)
  • Immigration (inc. settlement issues; refugees, asylum seekers)
  • Education (primary, secondary and tertiary education)
    Housing and Real Estate (public, business & private sectors)
  • Banking and finance (business & private)
    Legal (police, courts, legal, councel, prisons
    & community matters)
  • State and federal tribunals
  • Health/ Medical (general medicine, specialist, allied health)
  • Community organisations and council
  • Tourism and hospitality
  • Art
  • Sport and recreation
  • Native title

 

Any Language Other Than English (LOTE) units/ subjects may not be offered until the student has attended the course for one semester.

Assessment

The intention of this course is to define a viable and valued workplace outcome. Students completing any associated training course should be able to effectively perform a substantive work role.

The achievement of competence will be assessed by a range of methods aiming at maximum flexibility and customization to address specific needs and learning situations: observation of ongoing activities, short formal and informal tests, presentation of portfolios, role plays, observation of group discussion.

Students will undertake informal assessment on an ongoing basis. This assessment will be used by the teacher to monitor student progress and to provide appropriate feed back. The informal assessments do not contribute to the results achieved by a student. Students should be aware that all competency based tasks must be completed by the submission date. If a student does not pass their formal competency based assessment then they have the right to be re-assessed before they commence their end of semester tests.

Requirements to Receive the Qualification

To receive the Advanced Diploma, students are required to successfully complete all units of competence. A qualification will be issued based on the successful assessment of all units of competence.

Duration

Full-time 2 Years or 1 year after completion of Diploma of Interpreting (LOTE / English)
Tution Fee: $11,000 (AUD) per annum *Additional fees may apply

Prerequisites:

  • Successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent and Diploma of Interpreting (LOTE/ English);
  • AND International students: English language skills at least equivalent to IELTS 5.5 OR IELTS 5.0 with maximum 20 weeks ELICOS course OR Advanced level at Ozford English Language Centre.
